According to a report from the diplomatic mission, hundreds of admirers of the historic fighter gathered at “Che Garden” in the town of Horana to honor the figure who continues to inspire new generations.
As has been the case every year since 2008, the event took place at the estate where Che Guevara planted a tree in August 1959 during his visit to Sri Lanka—a tree that has endured as a symbol of the historic and deep friendship between the peoples of both nations.
The Cuban Embassy in Sri Lanka highlighted that the vast majority of participants were young people, for whom the Heroic Guerrilla Fighter remains a symbol of the “new man” and a model revolutionary.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage; SYU National Organizer Eranga Gunasekara; SYU Director of International Relations Anjana Amarasinghe; and the Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Patricia Lázara Pego Guerra.
The commemoration served as a reaffirmation of solidarity and a platform for all participants to denounce the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
On October 8, 1967, Che Guevara was wounded and captured in combat at the Yuro Ravine in Bolivia and was executed by the Bolivian army the following day.
