Senate President Davi Alcolumbre announced that the motion to establish a special voting schedule has 54 signatures for a vote, allowing both voting rounds needed to approve the initiative to take place on the same day.
The PEC 221/2019 seeks to put an end ti the so-called “6×1 schedule” work model, in which employees work six days a week and have only one day off.
The proposal is set to conclude its fifth and final discussion session in the first round on Wednesday; later, the Senate could vote on the text and, if approved, proceed to a second vote without standard waiting periods.
Although the Brazilian Constitution currently requires a five working-day interval between the two voting rounds for a PEC, this special mechanism would allow shortening that interval.
Before adoption, the initiative requires at least 49 of the 81 senators in each of the two voting rounds.
The PEC text establishes a gradual reduction of the workweek: the current 44-hour limit would remain in effect for the first 60 days following promulgation; it would then drop to 42 hours; and after one year, a maximum 40-hour workweek, with two rest days, would be established.
