China marks anti-poverty day amid social progress

Beijing, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) China observes National Poverty Eradication Day following the 2021 declaration that absolute poverty had been wiped out in the country.

Between 2012 and 2020, China, considered the world’s largest developing nation, lifted 98.99 million rural residents out of poverty, and removed 832 districts and 128,000 villages from official lists of impoverished areas.

Journalist Wang Shaoju, who documented the experience of the first Chinese village where a targeted poverty-alleviation strategy was proposed, told Prensa Latina that the leading principle is to place the population’s interests at the heart of all decision-making.

Wang explained that the Communist Party of China (CPC) took responsibility for addressing the hardships faced by families whose basic needs were not yet met, implementing measures to improve their living conditions.

The United Nations also observes International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17 each year, which in 2026 focuses on adequate housing, human rights, and human dignity.
