Paraguayan president-elect wins 42.74 percent of votes

Asunción, May 1 (Prensa Latina) After Sunday´s general elections, the Paraguayan people began on Monday with a new president-elect Santiago Peña who won the ballots with a 42.74% of votes.

Peña, economist and candidate of the ruling National Republican Association-Colorado (ANR-PC), won elections supported by 1,291,914 votes over his opponent Efraín Alegre, of the opposition Concertation For A New Paraguay, who reached 830,617 votes (27.4%).

The final figure from the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System of the High Court of Electoral Justice (TSJE) showed 461,297 more votes for the Santiago Peña-Pedro Alliana couple than for the Efraín Alegre-Soledad Núñez.

Peña, who will take office on August 15 for the 2023-2028 term, considered the “eighth of the democratic era” after the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989), also kept the ANR-PC, founded 76 years ago, in power.

The new president-elect called for “unity” in his first speech after Sunday’s general elections.
