Trinidad and Tobago on alert after failed plot
Port of Spain, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago today continue investigations into an alleged plot to destabilize the country carried out by criminal gangs that killed several people.
According to Police Commissioner Gary Griffith, law enforcement officials have so far arrested 72 people in connection with the uprising that took place over the past two days.
The gangs' plan included closing roads and setting fires at specific points between the town of Beetham and this capital to attack police forces when they came to put out the fires.
This is a well-orchestrated plot by certain gang leaders in the hope of gaining national support through chaos, fear and destruction, the police chief said.
One of the places attacked by the gang members was the Attorney General's office.
The government issued a red alert for police forces across the country for 48 hours, while investigations and prosecutions continue.
