'Week of Terror' in Peru due to escalation of Covid-19 cases
Lima, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Peruvians are experiencing what an expert described as a 'week of terror', due to the escalation of Covid-19 cases, the possible collapse of the health system and somber predictions about many more deaths, while there is a possibility of another confinement.
People's concern was stressed on Thursday, after the official report of 6,809 new cases and 204 deaths, totaling 407,492 and 19,021, respectively, as well as 40,000 deaths under suspicion of coronavirus.
In that context, Defense Minister Walter Martos confirmed that Peru is still under a night curfew, and Housing Minister Carlos Lozada said that the state of emergency, in force until today, had been extended until late August.
Lozada added that quarantines will continue in the regions of Arequipa, Ancash, Ica, Junin, Huanuco, San Martin and Madre de Dios, which were not included in the recovery stage that started on July 1, due to their critical situation.
After ruling out that Lima, where the largest numbers of contagions and deaths have been reported, will return to the quarantine, he added that confinement will be enforced in some regions of the country to stop the coronavirus from spreading, although it did not succeed in stopping the spreading of Covid-19 in all seven confined regions, due to non-compliance with the restrictions.
