Venezuela demands Cape Verde to comply with ruling on official

The Venezuelan Government recalled that since 2018, Alex Saab has been acting as Venezuela's special envoy, whose functions consist of obtaining supplies of medicines, food and other goods to bypass the United States blockade.
In mid-2020, the official was arrested in Cape Verde at the request of Washington, during a technical stopover of the aircraft that was carrying him, and in disregard of the inviolability of diplomatic immunity corresponding to his post as a diplomat.
From the moment of his arbitrary detention, all procedural lapses established by the Cape Verdean justice system were met in order to reach a conclusion in the judicial process.
Therefore, the ECOWAS Court ruled on December 2 that he must be granted a measure of permanent house arrest.
According to the Venezuelan Government, the detention of the special envoy is part of the obsessive siege campaign orchestrated by the outgoing US administration against Venezuela, in order to inflict more suffering on the people and to destabilize their institutions and internal order.
President Maduro warned that the health of the diplomat has been deteriorated and compromised during the development of the process, to which he advocated the immediate adoption of a humanitarian measure for the benefit of the detainee.

Through a communiqué, the Bolivarian Executive called upon Cape Verdean authorities -in consideration of the December holidays- to grant Saab a humanitarian measure that would allow him to share with his beloved ones in freedom, 'a condition that should never have been taken away from him,' Venezuelan authorities emphasized.
