New Delhi, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) India that has vaccinated over a million and half of its own people against Covid-19 will reportedly provide Sri Lanka next week half a million Covishield vaccines free of charge to fight the disease.
Sri Lanka will thus become the eighth country to receive donations of this type from India, noted the Daily News and Analysis newspaper on Sunday.
New Delhi began a mega national immunization program against the current pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on January 16.
As part of the government's declared 'neighborhood first' policy, India sent a shipment of the vaccine to seven other nations in the region, including Bhutan (150,000 doses), Maldives (100,000), Nepal (1 million), Bangladesh (2 million), Myanmar (1.5 million), Seychelles (50,000) and Mauritius (100,000).
Sri Lanka's drug regulatory body, the National Drug Regulatory Authority, gave the go-ahead last Friday to the vaccine produced in India, which was developed by the University of Oxford and the company Astrazeneca.
The first doses will be administered to health workers in the neighboring country. Colombo is expected to commercially acquire more Indian-made vaccines in the future.
