ACLU of Arkansas vows to prevent Bill 1570 from taking effect

Washington, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Arkansas today issued the following statement regarding the Arkansas Legislature´s vote to override Gov. Asa Hutchinson´s veto of House Bill 1570, which aims to ban healthcare from providing or even referring transgender young people for medically necessary health care.

According to progressive non-profit organization, gender-affirming care is life-saving care and banning that care will have devastating and in some cases deadly aftermaths.

‘The Arkansas Legislature has ignored dozens of local doctors and national medical experts, as well as trans youth and their parents.

This bill will drive families, doctors and business out of the state and send a terrible and heartbreaking message to the transgender young people who are watching in fear, ACLU posted Twitter.

ACLU supporters from around the country spoke out against this bill. We will always have your back and will be relentless in our defense of your rights.’

On Tuesday, Arkansas became the first in the country to make it impossible for trans youth to receive hormonal therapy and surgeries to change sex.

Such an initiative was passed in March by the Arkansas Legislature and was vetoed two days ago by Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Press reports pointed out that Arkansas recently passed several bills, which, in the opinion of its critics, limit the rights of trans youth.

Data from the Human Rights Campaign organization showed that nearly 200 proposals are under debate in the United States against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people.

In order to prevent and crack down on gender identity or sexual orientation discrimination, President Joe Biden issued an executive order at the beginning of his term on January 20.
