Cuban Society of Endocrinology committed to improving medical care

Havana, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Society of Endocrinology and Diabetes celebrates its 70th anniversary with the commitment to stimulate scientific research related to chronic diseases that affect the quality of life of patients.

The president, Dr. Silvia Turcios, told Prensa Latina that, to commemorate the anniversary and also with a view to improving the healthcare practice related to these pathologies, a Scientific Conference is being held at the Endocrinology Institute of this capital city.

As part of the activity, she said, the progress of the specialty will be reviewed, as well as the results of the work of great professionals, such as Dr. Daysi Navarro and Gilda Monteagudo, and the topics related to the diagnosis and therapeutics of certain diseases, such as diabetes, will be updated.

The event will also honor distinguished figures that promoted the development of these branches of medicine in the country, such as the late Dr. Oscar Mateo de Acosta, founder of the Endocrinology Institute, and Dr. Bartolomé Arce Hidalgo, pioneer in the study of in vitro fertilization in the country.

Turcios acknowledged that the work carried out by the Society becomes an important pillar in terms of the development and training of personnel associated with the specialties involved, which are in great demand in an aging society like Cuba’s.

One of the ambitions of this association is to add new members, for example, specialists in General Comprehensive Medicine, nurses and other technicians who provide services in diabetic care entities, the researcher and assistant professor said.

She also emphasized how the training of specialists contributes to the application of preventive approaches, to their ability to establish diagnoses, and to the definition and orientation of behaviors that delay the onset of chronic diseases.

She added that one of the permanent work guidelines is to encourage and develop research in each of the country’s provinces, to generalize its results and to provide professionals with better tools to increase the quality of care.

One of the greatest strengths of the guild, the specialist of Second Degree in Endocrinology remarked, is precisely its capacity to integrate itself to an existing network in the nation that, in a joint way, collaborates to the scientific findings, to the teaching and to the assistance practices.
