UN General Assembly opens debate on the end of the US blockade

United Nations, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) The two-day debate and voting on a Cuban draft resolution entitled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” began at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

According to the agenda, fifty speakers will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday and will vote on Cuba’s draft resolution on Thursday for the thirty-first time.

The report presented by UN Secretary General António Guterres recognizes the continuation of the blockade against Cuba and the Caribbean island’s inclusion on Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism list as actions that are incompatible with an international system based on law.

Both actions by the United States are flagrant expressions of the exercise of political and economic power in clear violation of human rights, including the right to development.

The negative effects of these measures are as obvious as they are inadmissible under the UN Charter and the principles of international law, the text, which was made available to all UN member states, added.

Despite this, Cuba continued to demonstrate its commitment to South-South cooperation, as well as its ability to contribute to addressing global problems such as the access to medical treatment and vaccines at the critical time of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the text, Cuba’s situation only confirms the necessity to dismantle unilateral coercive measures, which undermine sovereign rights, the realization of human rights and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

In this regard, the UN called on the signatory countries of the resolution to keep their efforts to end the unjust denial of Cuba’s right to self-determination and development.
