Costa Rican Parliament strengthens parole law

Costa-Rica-Asamblea-Legislativa
San José, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) The Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica took another step today in the reforms to laws aimed at reducing crime, with the modification of the parole law.

This change is the first one approved in the Congress in second debate, which will pass to the Executive for its analysis and final implementation.

The project puts forth a reform to article 64 of the Penal Code and establishes that for those convicted of crimes against life, private property, sexual safety and health, parole may be established until they have effectively served two thirds of the sentence imposed in a final judgment.

Currently, people convicted of these crimes are eligible for parole for half of their sentence.

Before the first debate, the deputies presented changes to the initiative, among them the variants added crimes that prevent convicted prisoners from taking advantage of the benefit, including drug trafficking, aggravated robbery, organized crime, money laundering, human trafficking, illegal organ trafficking, war crimes, genocide and sexual abuse of minors and disabled people.
