Prensa Latina stated that the sessions of the event began on May 30 and will continue until June 5. The Plenary Assembly, to be held on June 4 and 5, will bring together ministers, heads of international organizations, business leaders, civil society advocates, indigenous peoples, women, and youth from 186 countries.
They aim to chart an accelerated path toward achieving global environmental goals, given that the GEF is the financial mechanism for several international environmental agreements.
The 8th Assembly is preceded by concurrent meetings, such as the 71st Meeting of the Council, the 40th Meeting of the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) and the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), and the 6th meeting of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF), along with several activities aimed at boosting greater understanding of the methodologies and approaches of the international environmental financial mechanism.
The Assembly, the highest governing body of the GEF, will now be held every four years. The previous meeting was held in Vancouver, Canada, where participants paved the way for establishing the Kunming-Montreal GBFF, dedicated to biodiversity.
