Minister of Foreign Affairs asks EU to admit languages of Spain

Madrid, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares, announced today the request to the European Union (EU) that three languages of Spain be included in the linguistic regime of the community bloc.

We have officially requested this Thursday that Catalan, Basque and Galician be admitted to the EU agreement, said Albares at the end of the beginning of the XV Legislature of the Cortes Generales (Parliament).

By the way, with the assumption to the presidency of the Congress of Deputies of the socialist Francina Armengol, recently elected, she said that from now on it will be possible to speak in Catalan, Basque and Galician in the Hemicycle.

Albares pointed out that next September 19 the matter will be debated in the EU and that he sent a letter to the Presidency of the European Council, in which ‘the decision of the Government’ to request the inclusion of the Spanish languages other than Castilian that enjoy official status in Spain is transferred.

The acting minister acknowledged that the initiative is part of the agreement reached with Juntos por Cataluña and was sent on the day it was considered appropriate.

In his words to the media at the headquarters of the Lower House, Albares expressed his hope that the legislature that began today should be marked by talks and coexistence, for which it will be necessary to ‘talk with the political forces that are in Congress to achieve a legislature of progress’.
