Over 200 ancient coins seized at Cairo airport

Cairo, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) Egyptian authorities detained a passenger at Cairo International Airport who attempted to smuggle abroad more than 200 ancient coins, Egypt Today website reported on Thursday.

According to the source, the archaeological unit at the airport seized 203 Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins.

The investigation confirmed the significance of the seizure, which is consequently subject to the Antiquities Protection Law of 1983.

Director General of the Archaeological Unit Center at Cairo Airport Hana al-Mashoor explained that the coins come from different historical periods and therefore they have diverse shapes and sizes.
